"Living in a global community calls for an appreciation and understanding of foreign languages and cultures. Languages are the vehicles for culture and communication, and learning a foreign language promotes greater cultural understanding and appreciation."
There is so much more to studying a foreign language than just the language itself. Learning a foreign language gives you the opportunity to learn about the people who speak it, their histories, and most importantly, their stories. It is through studying a foreign language that you are able to understand another culture. Knowing the language is one thing, but to be able to understand the social contexts in which people come from is just as important.
Studying a foreign language has presented so many opportunities that I would have never been able to take advantage of if I had not known the language. I've been able to connect with people on a more intimate and personal level, building connections with communities all around the world. To this day, I've maintained these relationships with the people I have come in contact in different countries and I cherish these connections. I've been able to go back and visit my friends in Spain and Nicaragua after having been able to foster these relationships after all this time. Communicating with one another allows us to get to know one another, our different backgrounds, and our cultures. We help each other with our studies, helping each other to communicate in different languages, and it's truly a beautiful thing.
"Language is the road map of a culture; it tells you where its people come from and where they are going." - Rita Mae Brown
